Java

Java is an object-oriented programming language used for on many different computing devices.

Java consists of a development environment and a runtime environment. The Java runtime can be downloaded here. The Java development kit can be download here.

For our computer science class we will be programming using an Integrated Development Environment called Eclipse. Eclipse is an integrated tool that can be used for many tasks including development of Java applciations. Eclipse can be downloaded from eclipse.org.

It provides excellent topic coverage of Java and Object-Oriented programming. Chapter 4 Class design is introduced.
There is an optional graphics track throughout the book and recursion and data structures are the final chapters.
Applets should be ignored throughout the text.

Building Java Programs, Stuart Reges, Marty Stepp This book disccusses Class design a bit later, but it does an excellent job covering topics and includes software engineering information throughout.  Book website
Thinking in Java, Bruce Eckel Award winning Java book. Earlier editions are free. Current edition is version 4.
Excellent object design material, advanced topics covered very well.
